Halloween Happy Hour

If there were a Halloween term for Grinch, I’d be it. I just don’t like Halloween. I don’t know if it’s my own aesthetic – hating those awful Halloween decorations, the fact that I never had kids, or the fact that I exist in a blacked out house on Halloween because of our dogs, who would be barking non-stop if we encouraged Trick or Treaters to ring the bell.

I do believe, however, that it can be a fun occasion for an adult get-together.

And it can be classy.

I know all of my friends would groan aloud when reading on the invitation that they had to have a full-on costume, so I have another idea: how about asking them to wear a mask of their favorite cultural or political icon. This could later be linked to a group game of charades, each person secretly choosing one of the icons to act out, with a Halloween prize for the winner.

OUTDOOR DECOR:

This would be the optimum look.

INDOOR DECOR:

My indoor party decor would be three main items: A discreet wall decor, a terrific centerpiece, and decorated pumpkins.

BEVERAGES:

Choose a signature cocktail, like this Zombie, add in some tequila shots and wine and beer.

THE APPETIZERS:

Okay, okay…a little Halloween fun with the hors d’oeuvres and sweets.

THE SWEET TABLE:

This caramel apple bar will be a real hit.

FUN AND GAMES:

Don’t forget the option of Charades if your guests wore masks. Just ask each person to secretly select one of the icons and act it out.

Two other options: the game Werewolf, or create your own version of Fear Factor.

Have a great time, Grinch style!
